In 2001, Dr Robot began what would become its longest-running research project: develop a dynamically walking bipedal robot that would cost no more than a PC. Seven generations of robot prototypes followed and the technology developed for the HR Project has found its way into many other robots since. Moreover, HR’s patented DURAS architecture has become the standard platform for all Dr Robot’s mobile designs.

The HR6 was completed in 2003 and was the first humanoid robot Dr. Robot considered for retail distribution. It walks, talks, dances, evades obstacles and can even tell jokes or give investment advice. It is a remote brained robot that uses Bluetooth technology to stay constantly connected to a home PC and the Internet. This Web connection, along with an onboard camera, enables it to be used as an in-home monitoring device or a tool for checking on kids remotely. After an hour, it automatically plugs itself into a power outlet for recharging. If the HR6 falls over it is capable of getting up by itself, but due to instability in its walking mechanics its commercial release was postponed indefinitely.
